Hi, I’m Lucy! Welcome to Smile & Make, where you will find handmade vintage inspired dresses and accessories in quirky prints for ladies and girls. All of my dresses are handmade by me from start to finish in my workshop in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, UK which I share with my lovely Mum Bev, aka Spotty Daisy. I source beautiful quality cottons in eye catching conversational prints to create a unique collection of colourful dresses!
You can choose from a selection of ready made dresses, or I can make something in your size from my fabric stash! I offer a range of Made To Order dresses, where you choose a fabric and I will make it in your selected size. As I make all of the dresses myself, I only take a limited number of orders at a time. If you don't see any listings available under the "Made To Order" section, please do get in touch at email@example.com and I will let you know when I am ready to take more orders.
If you'd like to see a range of previous dress orders I have made, please take a look at my Pinterest boards for my Ladies' Dresses and Girl's Dresses, and if there is a particular fabric you like I will do my best to source some more for you.
All of my dresses are made with love and care, but due to their handmade nature please bear in mind that there may be small variations in size and print placement between each dress. I hope that you love your new dress but if it doesn't fit, you can return it in unworn condition for a full refund within 14 days of receipt, though return postage costs must be covered by you. As dresses are made in limited runs, I may not be able to offer a replacement. For more information, please see our Returns Policy (which can be found as a link under the product description of each listing).
All dresses are made from 100% cotton with a lined bodice and overlocked seams to ensure a good quality finish. To take good care of your dresses, please treat them gently! Either hand wash your dress, or machine wash inside out (preferably inside a pillow case for extra protection) at 30 degrees and please do not tumble dry.
A comprehensive size guide is included in the last product image for each listing.
Here at Smile & Make, we also offer a range of creative workshops in collaboration with Spotty Daisy, ranging from pretty paper craft to modern beginner dressmaking. You can see our current schedule under the "Workshops" tab.
I currently ship to the EU, USA, Canada, Australia & New Zealand. If I don't currently ship to your country but you would like to purchase something, please do get in touch.
Orders will be shipped within 2-3 working days, except Made To Order dresses which will be shipped within 3 to 4 weeks.
Please be aware that international shipments may be subject to customs and duty fees which will be the customer’s responsibility.
THE SMILE & MAKE STORY
I’m a crafty girl and have always loved sewing and making things. After sadly losing my incredible husband Michael to a brain tumour at the too young age of 35, I started dressmaking as a positive distraction and gradually built myself a colourful handmade wardrobe that I was proud to wear. After sharing my makes on my blog and Instagram feed, I had lots of requests to start selling my creations, so I decided to do just that!
I also raise money for brain tumour research through a dedicated fund in Michael’s memory with The Brain Tumour Charity. Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of under 40s, yet receive less than 2% of the national spend on cancer research in the UK, and so we need every penny we can raise to help fund research in the hope that there might one day be a cure for this cruel disease. A donation from every item you buy from Smile & Make will go to The Brain Tumour Charity: The Michael Barry Fund so you can help support an incredibly important cause. You can find out more about Michael's fund here.
If you would like to visit the Smile & Make workshop to see the dresses in person and give them a try, or to join in one of our creative workshops, we’d love to see you! You can find us at 11 Barracks Workshops, Barracks Road, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire ST5 1LG. Opening hours vary so please get in touch before planning your visit at firstname.lastname@example.org to avoid disappointment. We are directly opposite the bus station, so it couldn’t be easier to find us! There is a very limited amount of visitor parking available within the narrow courtyard of Barracks Workshops, but there is ample public parking just a few minutes walk away on either Windsor Street, Hassell Street or School Street (see here).
Thanks for stopping by!
